So they're releasing 500 of the little furry darlings, anyone else get
the mental image of 500 voles rushing for the water bank carrying
little umbrellas, water wings and BBQ kit all looking for the best
spot?

Ah but are these all English voles? If not, you can bet that the German
voles will get there first and nab all of the best spots. When the
English voles do arrive, they'll probably spend all of their time trying
to erect windbreaks and muttering that it looks like it's about to rain.

The German voles will dig large holes to mark their spots. And the
Dutch voles will start building forts at the waterline to defend
against the tide.

We aren't allowed to "export" soil from our garden as to do so would be
breaking the law - we have Japanese Knotweed (although it is diminishing
after the 6 years Gid has spent in the eradication programme)

Reintroducing the water vole to a length of a certain river after
they've "de-minked" the area. The mink has been dining out on vole
since it was released in this country.

Mind you, it isn't just mink; the change in UK farming practices
over the last 60 years has also been pretty harmful to voles -
IIRC, the population has reduced by 89% since about 1930; and
anything that eats voles as a first choice (like foxes) has had to
look around for another staple diet.
cheers,
Gideon.

Our dumbass, idiot governor just lifted the hunting ban on alligators even
though they're still supposed to be protected. Alligator's are losing
habitat left and right here because of over-development, so alligators are
having more human contact. Of course this is the alligator's fault and they
can be killed now to keep them out of people's way. I have decided that
stupid people have too much power in this state. :p And when stupid people
become powerful, that stupidity turns into evil.

Such tests are discriminatory. Why should being a clueless buffoon make you
unsuitable to make decisions affecting hundreds, thousands, or millions of
people?
Anyway, betcha the people setting the tests would set a pass rate of "50%".
Best case, that would mean IQs of 100 would pass (despite the fact that
someone with an IQ of 100 can barely be trusted to tie their own
shoelaces). More likely, "50%" would be interpreted as IQ of 50, and I've
found too-long-forgotten loaves of bread with higher IQs than that.

Which pre-supposed that IQ has anything to do with common sense. What we
need is politicians who *a) listen and (b) weight waht they hear
appropriately. The adivece of the knowledegable few should be taken more
seriosly than that of the ignorant many - though both should be heard.
Do we have any ability to test for quality of listening, and are
politicians ever measured agaisnt that standard?

I'm sure the politicians agree 100% with the above. It's just that they
have a different definition of "knowledgeable" than you. From their point
of view, someone who runs a multi-billion dollar company surely must be in
the know, while a lowly scientist surely is ignorant, or why else would he
be in a position of no power?
While I don't want to stir up the IQ test debate again, and IQ tests only
measure one defined part of possible skills, it's still testable, I still
don't think it's bad to require a /minimum/ of that skill.

I agree. IQs measure potential, so surely it is better to have someone
with the potential in charge rather than one with zero potential. Granted
the one with zero potential may think the same way you do, but would be
unable to do anything about it. Better IMHO the one who doesn't *yet*
agree wth you as they have the potential to be weedled to your way of
thinking *and* then able to do something constructive about it.

I do not agrere that IQ measures potential in any wides sense. It
measures ability at a particularly narrow span of problems involving
deductive logic. I do not agree that politicians need more than a
minimal amount of such capability: they can employ experts to do that.
Indeed, someone who has honed their skills in the direction of what IQ
tests test is likely (but far from certain) to have neglected the human
relationship, touchy-feely side of their nateure, which is IMO more
important for a politician.
It is very difficult to be really top of the tree in more than one
field. The occasional Leonardo da Vinci does it, but mostly peple have
to play down one aspect in order to build up another.
What we need in our politicians are good people-judging skills. They
have to be able to shift the knowledgeable from the bullshitters from
the uninformed, then obey the knowledgeable, slap the bullshitters, and
reassure the uninformed. None of which is tested by any IQ test I know
of.

If, and this is a big IF, they are willing to let others draw the
conclusions for them. IQ does, to a certain extent, measure the ability to
draw conclusions based on evidence at hand, and if you don't have that
skill, you have to be willing to let others who have it do it for you.

Having knowledge doesn't imply making the right choice. You can absorb
entire libraries and be extremely knowledgeable but still unable to deduce
consequences, or understand and employ basic logic. Some current
politicians see correlations and then draw premature conclusions about
what's the cause and what's the effect. This isn't because of a lack of
knowledge, but because of a lack of reasoning.
This is why I think it wouldn't hurt to have a /minimum/ requirement for
deductive reasoning in politicians.

People often mention IQ and shoelaces in the same sentence, but I've
never successfully learned to tie shoelaces, and I'm pretty sure I'm
reasonably intelligent....

That's because we're too dumb to think up a better metaphor. :-)

My solution? Slip-ons!

Oasis soup for minks.
You get a vole with it.

I can tie shoelaces, but apparently I tie 'em wrong. Anyone who's
ever seen me tie a bow tells me it shouldn't be done like that (I once
reduced a shoe shop assistant to fits of giggles "I've never seen
*anyone* tie a lace like that!") but when they try to show me how
it *should* be done, I can't follow it. I've decided that my technique
is just so advanced that the rest of the world isn't ready for it yet.

Funny, that; I know for a fact that my IQ is well above 100</brag> and
while I can tie my shoelaces -- the normal way, no less -- I'm no speed
demon. Dyspraxia may have something to do with it, but somehow it feels
like more than that. As for techniques, there are many valid and
workable ones, and at least one web site (but probably hundreds)
dedicated to learning a particular technique for doing it fast, should
you feel the need.

Indeed. A classic examplfe OF someone with way too much time on his hands

Perhaps you're *too* intelligent? There's no room in your brain to
hold the information on tying your laces :)
